AGP Aperture Size Article
CyberCPU tackle the thorny subject of AGP aperture size settings. Some of the results are a little puzzling when you consider most graphics cards need an aperture size of at least 16MB to actually enable AGP at all. I tend to favour the rule of twice your graphics card memory unless it has less than 64MB onboard then use half your system memory as a rule of thumb.

Probably one of the most confusing things associated with 3D performance is AGP Aperture size. Some people say to make it the same size as your video memory and others say max it out. Well we are going to get to the bottom of it here and find out what works best.

GeForce FX Preview
The GeForceFX previews are still appearing on the 'Net, this one's from Zephir Tech.

NVIDIA unveiled the GeForce FX at Comdex several weeks ago, in one of the largest launch events they’ve ever held. I got a chance to attend the launch event while I was at Comdex, and also a chance to meet with Carrie Cowan, NVIDIA’s PR Manager, and Todd Reddick, NVIDIA’s Senior Product Manager of Desktop GPUs, a few days after the launch. While you’ve most likely read GeForce FX previews already, as the chip has been public knowledge for a few weeks now, I feel that this preview goes a little deeper...

Professional 3D Accelerators in 3ds max 5: November 2002
Digit-life break out their copy of 3ds max 5 and test out a brace of graphics cards. Of particular concern are the the poor performance from both ATi and Matrox.

This time we have a chance to test professional video accelerators on a dual-processor system. I have chosen the most powerful and promising video cards available in our lab. The test program is 3ds max from Discreet of the new fifth version. I won't dwell on the changes because those who are interested in this packet are aware of them.

ASUS A7N8X nForce2
[H]ard|OCP have the ASUS A7N8X on the bench. his is shaping up to be the best of the bunch so far and justifies AMD's decision to launch their last two processors on it.

The ASUS A7N8X is one of the first incarnations of the nVidia nForce2 chipset-based motherboards to hit retail shelves. We have seen good and bad previews of the technology. How will it look when it gets to your box?

AGP 8X A Closer Look
I think the lack of current performance from AGP 8X is something most of us are aware of but OCAddiction have padded out their article with lots of useful details and info.

Will the AGP 8X provide twice the amount of raw gaming and/or application performance seen in AGP 4X? No, it won't even come close at this point in time. To AGP 8X's defense however, the technology is not being billed as the savior of graphic solutions. Nor are there any claims that AGP 8X will deliver twice the performance of an AGP 4X video card. Still, we have to take into consideration that current applications simply are not optimized for the newer spec, or drivers, and even hardware for that matter.

Visiontek goes for Nvidia products
The inquirer is reporting that the newly resurrected will continue to work alongside NVIDIA.

VisionTek, a division of Hartford as it likes to be called, hasn't told us how much money it spent for the Visiontek and Xtasy brands, but we learned that it also acquired key personnel from sales and marketing from the former firm.

WinBackup Review
ExtensionTech.net has finished up their review of WinBackup. Apparently, because LIUtilities actually listens to feedback, the review had to be re-written a few times.

What would happen if your computer crashed today? Would you lose important documents? Bookmarks? Pictures? If so, you had better think about backing up your files regularly. If you aren't doing it now, you should. Trust me on this one. Other websites have looked at WinBackup from LIUtilities, but please, take a peep at the ExtensionTech.net review of it. You shouldn't be disappointed, and maybe perhaps a bit more enlightened after reading some other short reviews that I have personally seen. After all, you can't just read one review of something and decide on buying or not buying it can you? I do wish my retail version of WinBackup would have came by the time of posting this review, but it didn't. So I can't show you that. Oh well.

Chenming (ATX-901A) Fileserver Case Review
Neoseeker just posted their review of the 21" Chenming Fileserver case.

The case is very heavy duty. It's one of the heaviest cases due to the thickness of the steel used in its construction, and it has some of the best edge rounding you can find in a case. The 3.5" HD fan cages use a snap on locking mechanism that allows tooless removal and replacement of the cage (you still need to screw the HDs into the cage though).

Athlon MP 2400+ Review
AMD's latest MP get worked over by the guys at AthlonXP. If you've got the cash to pull it off and the apps to make use of it then dual MP 2400+s offer some serious muscle!

In August we took a look at the next generation of MP processors from AMD. The newly introduced Thoroughbred core was to replace the current pride of the AMD stables the Palomino. Running the new 0.13-micron copper process cores the Thoroughbred's were running cooler while consuming less power. AMD was putting the Palomino out to pasture with the arrival of the MP 2200+ processors. Well we are here today to introduce you to the new STUD in the AMD stables the AMD MP2400+ processors.

Packard Bell WinAmp Remote Control Review
PCExtreme has published a review on the Packard Bell WinAmp Remote Control from TekGems.com , which turned out to be a nifty little gadget.

My first thought when I saw this remote control from Packard Bell was what in the heck would I need a remote for my computer for? But then after I had it all setup and configured I wondered why in the heck I had never gotten one before this! And considering the low cost of this item, once you have one, maybe you will never go without.

Kingwin KWI-450W PSU Review
Bryan over at OCC has completed a review on the King 450Watt Triple fan power supply unit. I wouldn't recommend a "measly 220wat PSU" to users of most modern CPUs no matter how average they are. Here is a quote from his review:

For the average computer owner, that measly 220W power supply is more than enough to power their system. For the enthusiast, it's all about power, and demand for power can be double or even triple that of the average owner. Not only do we have to run our highly over clocked computer, we have to power other items such as Cold Cathode Lights, Fan Buses, LCD displays, a dozen fans, a water cooling setup, and maybe even a TEC/Pelt, and the more items we add, the more power we need. Well, thanks to companies like Kingwin, we have a supplier for our demanding needs. And today, they've supplied us with a 450W Triple Fan Switching Power Supply.

AeroCool X-Factor CPU Cooler (HSF) Review
Overclockers Club Canada has completed a review on the AeroCool X-Factor CPU Cooler. Here's a quote :

The main body and fins of the X-Factor are made of extruded aluminum, with a copper center core which contacts the processor. This is an increasingly common design configuration which makes sense from the perspective of physics - effectively, copper is very efficient at conducting heat (ie., from the cpu) and aluminum is more efficient at dissipating, or getting rid of, the heat. Let's have a look.

Logitech Cordless Elite Duo Review
OCIA takes an in-depth look at the Logitech Cordless Elite Duo in their latest 5 page review. Here's some snippage :

In the top right of the keyboard, we find our first set of one-touch hot keys. It is important to note that the first time you use each of these hot keys, a dialog box pops up giving a brief summary of the key's function. At this screen you also have the opportunity to modify the function of the key. The "My Home" button takes you directly to your preset home page. Mine happens to be set for OCIA. When one of these buttons is pressed, a green text explanation of the button is displayed on-screen. For example, when I press the "My Home" button, OCIA is listed in green text centered at the bottom of the screen.

Albatron GeForce4 Ti 4280PV
EXHardware is back with their review of the Albatron GeForce4 Ti 4280PV Graphics card! Albatron has managed to build up a solid reuputation for themselves and their latest Ti 4280PV graphics card packs all the power of nVidia's GeForce4 Ti 4200-8X GPU with 128MBs of memory and VIVO capabilities into an amazing package.

The Albatron GeForce4 Ti 4280PV comes packaged in the usual Albatron fashion and the PV model reviewed here today also features VIVO (Video In & Video Out) support as well as 128MB of memory. Once again, Albatron provides a good software bundle with their graphic cards including all the necessary accessories. In our unit however, the driver CD only had the nVidia Detonator XP 30.30 drivers which do not support the new Ti 4200-8X cards so remember to download the latest Detonator XPs (40.72 above) before you install the card!
