The Next Generation of ATA Drives, and the Precursor to
Serial ATA, Seagate Barracuda V
|
|
I'm
not sure it makes much sense to rush out and buy a fast
"stop-gap" HDD while you wait for SerialATA
but if your old one has died and you need fast then this
is fast! got apex? took a look and then ask why any normal
person would need a bigger 200GB drive....guess they've
never edited video then!
|
|
There isn't much of a difference in the HDD externally
as you can see. The first two pictures are the front and
back of the 'Cuda V. The one major difference was that
the back of the IV had instructions on it for retail sale.
I am guessing this will also be so when the V hits retail
shelves eventually. Is there any other changes? Does the
20GB/platter density increase make much of a difference?

Motherboard Review Double-header!
|
|
2CPU
bring us a dual CPU bonanze with a look at the AOpen DX3R
Plus-U dual PIII (Tualatin) board and also the MSI E7500
Master LS dual Xeons and dual channel DDR.
|
|
AOpen DX3R Plus-U
The board arrives with almost everything required to
get you up and running. The first time I picked up the
box I was a little stunned at the weight. I was to find
out why pretty shortly. The box is crammed full of gear.
A massive manual covering not only the DX3R Plus-U but
also the Fortress 9500 server package, two I/O plates
(one standard and one to suit the AOpen SV520 chassis,
socket terminator, 5 position LVD cable, 50 pin narrow
SCSI cable, extra serial port cable, IDE cable, PCI slot
USB expansion plate, the usual driver software and Symantec's
Norton Antivirus 2002. There's also a nice product catalogue
showing AOpen's forthcoming VIA based dual Xeon offering.

MSI's E7500 Master LS
As I just mentioned, the Sandra memory scores for the
dual channel DDR weren't bad, but they weren't stellar
either. Considering that all of Intel's server and workstation
chipsets are dumping RDRAM for DDR, I guess I figured
the scores should be better. As it turns out though, Sandra
apparently isn't telling the whole story.

ExoticPC Romeo DX Case
|
|
There's
an interesting looking case on test over at PimpRig. That
chrome insignia on the front is crying out for a backlit
LCD temp readout or something similar in it.
|
|
Ahanix cases are truly a joy to behold, a combination
of style and engineering. The Romeo DX case continues
this tradition, being well thought out, with a removable
motherboard tray, tons of expansion room and USB ports
up front. The dynamic front bezel is removable for immediate
color changes. Peter at ExoticPC came through in a blaze
with the Romeo DX, the case is a top 10 in function and
features at a remarkably small price.

Compad Speed-Pads review
|
|
DarkVision
give their rodent a workout on the Compad Speed-Pad. Apparently
these are designed with optical mice in mind.
|
|
Most manufactors claimed that you could perfectly use
an optical mouse without a mousepad. But was that true?
Well yeah , but working with a pad under your mouse is
always much more comfortable. First I thought that there
wasn't much difference between mousepads, but after using
a few I noticed that there were huge differences.

ATi Radeon 9700 Pro
|
|
SubZeroTech
put the Radeon 9700 Pro to the test and pretty much decide
it can do everything it says on the box.
|
|
The Radeon line started about two years ago with the
ATi Radeon video card. Then we saw many other video cards
from ATi based off this chipset such as the Radeon VE
and Radeon LE etc. Then came the Radeon 8500 (R200) chipset.
As like the Radeon card the Radeon 8500 was popular for
it's high performance and excellent pricing. Then comes
the highly anticipated R300 core, the Radeon 9700 Pro.
But the question now is, will ATi fulfill the anticipation
of the Radeon 9700 Pro crushing all competition?

|
|
Matt
over at 3DGPU has Logitech's attention grabbing MX700
cordless mouse on test. Head on over to see what all the
fuss is about.
|
|
Logitech came up with this cordless mouse to compete
with Microsoft obviously, and what better way than to
throw all the bells and whistles at it? 8 buttons to utilize?
A powerful and fast sensor at an accurate 800dpi being
utilized? Rechargable batteries with the RF receiver doubling
as a rapid recharging station? Sign me up, immediately!
While the price may turn off some people at around $80,
it could be worth it. Read on to see if it's the right
mouse for you.

AMD to support DDR-II in future Hammer processors
|
|
SiliconStrategies
are reporting that while the initial offering will support
only standard DDR, AMD are planning on implementing Hammer
support for DDRII in later revisions.
|
|
Fred Weber, AMD vice president and chief technology officer,
told the JEDEC-sponsored IC meeting that a new processor
core with on-die memory controller will be developed to
support DDR-II. The initial Opteron Hammer chip for servers
and the desktop Claw Hammer version have on-die controllers
supporting only the present DDR generation.

Ati Radeon 9000 Pro Review
|
|
There's
yet more Radeon action happening over at BurnOutPC, this
time it's the 9000 Pro that's feeling the heat.
|
|
Today I'm looking at the Ati Radeon 9000Pro. This is
ATI's challenge to the budget computer market. The card
that has the latest technology onboard, and packed with
enough power to play UT2003 at 1024x768 everything high,
without any problems.

Vantec EZ-Swap Removable Hard Drive Rack Review
|
|
Overclockedcafe
took a look at the Vantec EZ-Swap removable hard drive
rack. It supports ATA133 IDE drives, comes with a 40 mm
fan to help keep things cool, DIP switches that allow
you to change the drive from Master to Slave status (without
opening the enclosure), an alarm feature in case of overheating,
and all of this in an aluminum housing.
|
|
When it comes to the term removable media,
a lot of different drive types probably come to mind.
I mean, youve got your obvious ones, like the floppy
drive, and the CDROM drive. Then, youve got Zip
drives, tape drives, and more recently, flash drives (a.k.a.
pen drives). In fact, about the only thing that normally
doesnt come to mind is a hard drive. That makes
sense, right? I mean, why in the world would you want
a removable hard drive?

|
3dGameMan
continue to batter their bandwidth with yet another videp
review, this time looking at the onnovative ABIT Siluro
Ti4200 OTES.
|
|
"The Abit Siluro Geforce4 Ti4200 OTES Video Card
is an eye catcher with an incredibly designed cooler.
This amazing cooler on the core performs very well allowing
a high overclock, however, it is loud. Also, since it
is based on the nVidia Geforce4 series Video Cards it
is very stable and compatible. Watch the Video to find
out more..." ~3dGameMan.com
