nForce 2 Shuttle
Yesterday saw the launch of the nForce 2. This is the latest chipset platform from NVIDIA (apparently chipset is now a 1999 term) which is going to be used in motherboards graphic motherboards (the term "integrated graphics" had most people turning away). nForce 2 is being aimed at both office, home and enthusiasts. Capturing all those markets is hard, and NVIDIA were required to put a lot of thought into this.

Yesterday's launch resulted in more "paper launch" shouts, however boards from third party manufacturers should appear on shelves within 3-4 weeks. We did some tests on a reference nForce 2 board, there was little point in publishing those since the performance shown by production boards tend to be greater than reference ones.

Much as the nForce 2 impressed us, we were also witness to the new Shuttle PC which used the nForce 2 motherboard, in Flex ATX format.

nForce 2 is a brilliant platform for such a computer since it has the option of dual Ethernet interfaces, 2 VGA outputs, Firewire, USB 2.0, Dolby Digital 5.1 all built onto the chipset. We were told that this was one of the first such Shuttle models, and it was more of an engineering sample rather than retail product. Although no major change is expected, cables are expected to be neater. Also one has to remember that this has been fondled by a number of journalists.

For size comparison we used a bottle of Bud'. Due to time constraints, we were unable to get results using this system, however it has to be stressed that this is an engineering sample rather than the finished product heading for shelves. The processor under that heatpipe is a AMD Athlon XP 1600+.

Another interesting artifact we saw was this reference Geforce 4 Ti4600. Apparently Zalman went crazy and created this heatpipe cooler for the unit.

The best bit? No fans resulting in no noise. Lovely.

And a small tit-bit, one of our NVIDIA friends, Adam Foat was keen to show the world how his recent surgery went, so here he was today :-

And for the "before" :-

We still can't make our minds up which works for Adam.
