Geforce FX - getting acquainted
Updated 21 November 2002, 23:00 - see update

With Comdex starting NVIDIA decided to release a whole load of information about their upcoming NV30 card. Given the name Geforce FX (reasons coming up) the NV30 is NVIDIA's answer to the Radeon 9700 PRO which has dominated the performance league in the second half of 2002. The timing of this information release is critical with the Radeon 9700 PRO having a clear run up to Christmas it was obvious that NVIDIA needed to do something to tell the public that they aren't dormant.

Why Geforce FX? Well, Geforce is a good brand name. With 4 generations of cards using this name and bring nothing but kudos to NVIDIA it's hardly surprising that NVIDIA are unwilling to do all that work again. FX because this is the first card produced in conjunction with members of the 3DFX team that NVIDIA acquired upon purchasing the outfit a few years back.

There are a few things you need to know about the Geforce FX and today's "launch". The card isn't going to hit the shelves until next February. Silicon will be shipped to manufacturers in December with final boards done in January. After that it will be shipped to distributors and then end up in the hardware shop. Today was all about letting the press and you guys know about what the card is all about. There is extra pressure on NVIDIA to make this card "work" - more so than Geforce 3 or 4. ATI's Radeon 9700 has a major performance lead at the moment and the Ti4600 or Ti4800 (review) have no answer to this. NVIDIA have taken some radical steps in order to correct this.

We'll start off with what you all want to see, the card in all it's glory.

We've had to split the pages up otherwise you guys would have huge load times. We apologies for a mostly graphical preview but as the saying goes, a picture tells a thousand words.
