High Performance PC Silencing

Quiet PC "hear yourself think"

Case prep continued: Power Supply

The last step in case preparation is installing the power supply. The thing to pay attention to here is noise generation versus power output. Again, I took Dave's advice and went with a Nexus 4000. While the name sounds like a ship from Battlestar Galactica, this one of the quietest rated PSU's on the market having a noise rating of just over 20db. With a 400W power rating, this PSU should have enough juice to keep the main rig here in the 3DV dungeon running full steam, even with the addition of cold cathode lights and LED fans.

I wanted to see what the real difference was between the Nexus and another "silent" power supply, so I cracked it open. Well, what I found was a nice quiet 80mm fan, and a giant heat sink. I opened a Thermaltake Purepower supply that is here as well for comparison. As you see, there is about half the heatsink in the Tt, which is a fairly quiet PSU (although by no means silent) Shuch a large heatsink would allow more heat to dissipate with less air blowing past, resulting in less noise.

Intstallation is as straight forward as it can get. Hold in place.. add screws.. voila!

With the case almost ready to go, lets have a look at fans...
