The following synthetic tests were created
by PowerVR to showcase the features of their Kyro
graphics architecture and therefor they should be
fairly neutral when it comes to any specific optimisations.
Although we're familiar with the VillageMark and TempleMark
tests and feel confident in the results, the FableMark
and Fortune tests are relatively new to me and I suggest
you put slightly less faith in the scores until we
get more results in to verify reliability and fairness.
D3D
Fortune
One of several PowerVR benchmarks worth
using is their D3D Fortune. This is a fairy rough
and ready approximation of fillrate shows how both
the 5800 and 5900 edge out the Radeon 9700 Pro in
pure fillrate performance.

FX 5900 Ultra Detonator 43.45

FX 5900 Ultra Detonator 44.03

Radeon 9700 Pro

FableMark
v1.0
FableMark recreates a front lit puppet
theater which shows the fable of the Tortoise and
the Hare. By far the biggest factor here is the ability
to handle shadows and I was keen to see if the 5900
was in any way superior at rendering shadows that
were not specially coded to take advantage of the
UltraShadow technology.

FX 5800 Ultra Detonator 43.45

FX 5800 Ultra Detonator 44.03

FX 5900 Ultra Detonator 44.03

Radeon 9700 Pro
What we see is how the Detonator 44.03
drivers increase performance by a healthy margin over
the 43.45s, thus dispelling the rumours I've been
reading that the 44.03s offered nothing more than
the 3DMark03 optimisation/cheat. Equally interesting
is the fact that the 5900 Ultra took a very definite
lead here and while I don't know if it's directly
attributable to UltraShadow it looks as though it
might be.

VillageMark
v1.17
FX 5800 Ultra Detonator 43.45

FX 5800 Ultra Detonator 44.03

FX 5900 Ultra Detonator 44.03

Radeon 9700 Pro
Boy those 44.03s were a bit special.
Here we see a significant jump in the FX5800 Ultra's
performance from last place at 100fps to a convincing
first with 131fps. The 5900 Ultra rolls in with a
second place finish.

OpenGL
VillageMark v1.17
FX 5800 Ultra Detonator 43.45

FX 5800 Ultra Detonator 44.03

FX 5900 Ultra Detonator 44.03

Radeon 9700 Pro
And the OpenGL version of VillageMark
produces a carbon copy of the D3D version with the
5800 Ultra promoted from last to first and the 5900
Ultra rolling in just behind it. It's a shame the
5800 wasn't launched with the 44.03s!

TempleMark
v1.0.2
This benchmark is focused far more on
a card's multitexturing capabilities and I was rather
expecting the Radeon to take this one. Seems I was
wrong.

FX 5800 Ultra Detonator 43.45

FX 5800 Ultra Detonator 44.03

FX 5900 Ultra Detonator 44.03

Radeon 9700 Pro
A bit of a change in fortunes here as
the primarily multitextured TempleMark seems the favour
the 5900 Ultra. Here we see no benefit to the 5800
Ultra when running the Detonator 44.03s with it wandering
in last behind the Radeon.
