Introduction It's
quite a while since I've reviewed a CPU cooler, partly I suppose because we seem
to have pretty much hit the wall as far as performance goes but also because nothing
particularly innovative in other ways had caught my eye. Sure there are plenty
of wild and whacky designs around, some even work worth a damn, but most are just
new variations on old themes. So what made me want to look
at this particular cooler? Well to be brutally honest with you nothing did, I
was offered it to review and in a moment of weakness said yes. Fortunately I haven't
lived to regret it because this is actually a very nice unit with a good performance
and its fair share of innovation thrown in too. It's a hybrid copper/aluminium
unit with a great fan and a lot of endearing features. Let's
get the numbers out of the way:
We're
looking at the VP4- C7040 which is the Pentium4 version, though the only difference
is the mounting clip. The Technology
Other than the fan which we'll look at in a moment, the
principle behind the Aeroflow's design is quite simple. Each fin is machined into
the sink so that is has a sloping back face. This, it's claimed, keeps the air
moving and helps it to vent at the bottom of the sink with less turbulence and
thus less disruption to the flow. What it definitely does do is let the air reach
the CPU package, or in the case of the P$ version we're testing, the heat spreader,
and this also aids with the cooling.
