Introduction :
The brief for this review was very simple, to
find a set of high quality yet low price speakers that offered
top notch gaming performance but which were also versatile enough
to cope with music audio and DVD playback. Having been blown
away by their value ATP series speakers, Altec Lansing were
one of the first places to turn and today I'm reviewing their
3 piece 2100 speaker system.
Altec Lansing are certainly no strangers to he
world of computer and home entertainment sound systems. For
years their name has been associated with the very best and
their systems can be found in such renowned places as The United
Nations Building, Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Disneyland and
Disneyworld, New York's Lincoln Philharmonic Center and the
Schubert Theatre, MGM's Grand Hotel, The Singapore National
Stadium, and The Sydney Opera House, to name a few. Okay, so
these systems aren't likely to have retailed at the same £89.95
that the 2100s come in at but experience at this level inevitably
filters down to the mainstream products. It seems there ate
literally hundreds of multimedia speaker systems on the market
today, many by strange sounding companies that we've never heard
of. They seem to offer incredible performance for almost no
cost at all but don't be fooled. Just because you can buy a
set of "Purple Lotus" ultra high performance 5000
watt speakers for the cost of a bus trip doesn't mean you're
getting anything more than a genuinely awful sounding product
with an RMS rating of 5 watts and a bass that booms and distorts
so badly you'll hear nothing else over the din. When it comes
to speakers it seems there are only certain companies you can
trust and without a doubt Altec Lansing are one such company.
