Part Eleven: CPU Performance

How well the 1.33GHz Athlon performed in Sissoft's Sandra benchmarks, I was eager to see how the new XP 1800+ would fair.... (All results thumbs' are clickable)

(Sandra's CPU Benchmark)

Sandra CPU Benchmark
Dhrystone ALU
Whetstone FPU
AMD Athlon XP 1800+
4261 MIPS
2094

A flying start by the XP 1800+, needless to say it soundly beat the reference performance of the 1.6 Intel based solution and is surely keeping pace if not just edging past the 1.8GHz version. A true testament to AMD's great design.

Floating-Point 3DNow!
AMD Athlon XP 1800+
8541 it/s
9831 it/s

The Athlon XP's Quantispeed features had a chance to demonstrate how effective they were in this benchmark. A great performance one again, eclipsing both the 1.6GHz Intel chip and surpassing the AMD Athlon 1.33GHz chip buy a sizable margin too. The new Athlon proved what a great multimedia performer it was once more yet I expected the floating point iterations to increase more than they did.

(Sandra's Memory Benchmark)

Sandra Memory Benchmark
Int ALU/Ram Bandwidth
Float FPU/Ram Bandwidth
AMD Athlon XP 1800+
737 MB/s
811 MB/s

By utilizing the AMD based chipset, some great scores were on display here. Providing more bandwidth than every other reference chipset, except the 800MHz Rambus based systems, the XP didn't disappoint again. The figures are set to increase even further very soon with the release of VIA's KT266A based chipset. A mouth watering prospect indeed...

Part Twelve: Further multimedia Testing

I also needed to see how good this chip could be when DVD playback was a chief concern. Running the full benchmark of Video 2000 should help determine how good this chip is...

Utilizing a XP 1800+ for DVD playback produces some stunning results. I frequently watch DVD movies on my PC and I could notice the difference as soon as the films first started playing. Everything seemed just that tad bit smoother and I experienced no problems at all. The CPU and the Radeon combined to produce a great Video2000 result and you will see the effects very clearly if DVD playback is of a high level of importance to you.

An ever increasing factor of importance these days seems to be how well the CPU overclocks. Let's see what the XP 1800+ has in store for us as we move toward Page Seven...
