Introduction:::...
It's
not too long ago that AND announced the birth of their Socket-939
platform so it's good to see the list of comptible processors
increasing so soon.
The
processors I want to take a quick look at today are the
recently announced Athlon64 4000+ running at 2.4GHz and
the FX55 which runs at 2.6GHz. Both still use the "old"
0.13micron process, a fact that must make Intel sting a
little after their move to 0.09microns so early in the year.
AMD
keep turning up the revs and the A64 somehow keeps responding,
though it should be said that in the case of the 4000+ AMD
have increased the L2 cache to 1MB rather than incresing
the core frequency This means three of their CPU's (five
if you include the two flavors of FX53) now run at 2.4GHz,
there's the 3700+ with its 64bit memory controller, the
3800+ with its 128bit (dual channel) memory controller and
only 512k L2 cache and finally the 4000+ with both a 128bit
dual channel memory controller and also 1MB L2 cache.
It's
a virtual victory as it's a virtual frequency but this release
marks the first time a processor has laid claim to the 4GHz
marker!
Due
to a delivery cock-up we got our samples rather late, as
such I don't plan on wasting too much time and effort duplicating
everything you've read already on other websites. I did
though want to run a few benchmarks and offer our thoughts
on these new chips.
