There's an absolutely bewildering number of memory makes and models on the market at the moment, and choosing the right one for your needs is becoming increasingly difficult for those with only a fleeting understanding of what all those confusing numbers mean. Should you buy DDR or DDR2? registered or unbuffered? CL2 or CL3? Low latency or ultra latency? is PC3200 the same as DDR400? Do I need matched pairs? It's no wonder some people are confused.
There are a few rules you can work with that tend to hold true. Buy as much as you can afford up to about 4GB generally, stick to well established names unless you know the product is reliable, and make sure your motherboard supports the modules you're buying.
Among the many reputable memory manufacturers you could buy from, some seem to have gained more prestige than others, and not necessarily for particularly valid reasons.
