Part Five: The Test Setup

The setup used for these benchmarks: -

nVidia's Geforce 4 Ti4200 reference board. (250MHz core / 500MHZ effective memory, using nVidia's Det. 28.32 drivers.)
eVGA's e-Geforce 4 Ti4600*. (300MHz core / 700MHz effective memory: Ltd. edition preorder frequencies. Using eVGA provided Det. 27.42 drivers)
ATi's Radeon 8500 Retail Edition. (275MHz core / 550MHz effective memory, using beta 6052 Win XP drivers)
AMD Athlon XP 2100+ (1.73GHz)
Abit KR7a RAID (VIA KT266A)
512MB Micron Cas 2 PC2100
45GB IBM ATA 100
Windows XP Pro

- Notes On Testing

* The eVGA card is using a different set of drivers, it's inclusion is only for high end comparison and attempts to illustrate the performance of a Ti4600 rather than serve as an accurate representation between the two nV based cards. Rather, the comparison between the Ti4200 and the 8500 is the important one. The only supported driver release to date for the Ti4200's are the 28.32 versions.

The Radeon doesn't have any LOD settings in it's drivers, thus the cards are set to best image quality to match the quality of the Radeon and ensure a 'level playing field'.

We start with Quake 3 Arena, a benchmark which we have seen many times before. nVidia seems to have the slight Open GL advantage of late, will this trend continue here..?

(Results Expressed In Frames Per/s)

An excellent start for the Ti4200. At higher resolutions the Ti starts to surpass the Radeon's output and maintains a much higher framerate. All three cards seem rather CPU limited at the lower resolutions as they produce very similar results. The slightly higher figures from the Ti4200 when compared to the Ti4600 is without question a driver difference and as we mentioned above, the Ti4600's inclusion is merely to illustrate the expected performance of a high end card at higher resolutions.
