Closer Look

The Golden Orb was delivered in your standard brown box by one of your standard delivery companies, and was packed to the brim by standard polystyrene bits. So far so standard, though it’s probably a little early to be making judgments quite yet!

The Box

Packing

The Golden Orb comes packaged up in what at first appears to one of those incredibly annoying fused plastic containers that require a small saw and a couple of plasters to remove. Luckily for my fingers, on closer inspection, the container is of the easily open able reseal able variety.

Packaging

As you can see, the front of the packaging nicely shows off the radial fin design of the cooler, while the rear shows the fan in all its LED glory as well as a features table.

If you look even closer you may notice the damage the packaging received in transit. While mildly annoying, the Orb itself received no damage, which just goes to show the packaging does its job!

Packaging Damage

As stated in the features, the Orb has a Copper core, surrounded by 66 Aluminium fins. Smack bang in the middle of all this sits a 100mm fan. The Orb goes against modern day cooler convention by not featuring a single heat pipe. Hopefully this won’t affect its performance against coolers which have embraced this technology. The Orb does of course also come with pre installed LEDs’.

Unsurprisingly the Orb comes with everything you’ll need to set it up on any of the supported sockets.

Contents

And a closer look at the copper core of the Orb reveals a near mirror finish. There are very fine machine marks visible, but nothing that would affect the Orbs performance.

Base Finish

Against other coolers the Orb stacks up fairly well, being only slightly smaller than a Thermalright XP-120, though it does weigh a good deal more.

Size Comparison

(you’ll have to excuse the dust on the XP120, rest assured it was all cleared up before returning to the work force)
