The packaging is certainly designed to present the ICECUBE in its best light. All the important technical and aesthetic features can be seen without needing to rip open the sandwich type blister pack. The use of blue artwork emphasises the "cool" feel but I'm sure they could have chosen a slightly livelier shade.

Out of the box you immediately notice both its size and its two-metal construction. There are a total of 43 fins, 22 aluminium fins at the top and 21 copper fins at the bottom which adds up to a fair old surface area.

CoolSonic quote weight as the reson for this cooler's part-aluminium construction but there seems to be a growing body of manufacturers who seem to be combining copper's ability to absorb heat with aluminium's ability to radiate heat for maximum cooling effect.

The picture below does a great job of showing how thin the copper contact plate on the base is. This may well mean heat is transferred more quickly to the heatpipes, but looking at some of the better coolers on the market most seem to feature much thicker bases that have the capacity to act as a buffer during times of high heat output. It could be argued that heatpipes negate the need for such a buffer but I'm not really thermally clued-up enough to understand which would offer the best balance of performance. Still, I guess that's what the testing is for.

The fins probably look a little out of shape in these pictures, and that's because they were, though to be fair to CoolSonic it looked like the package had suffered a pretty hefty knock en-route to me and it took me quite a while to get them even this straight!

Probably the easiest way to imagine the size of the ICECUBE is in relation to its own 80mm fan. The unit itself is a touch bigger than 80mmx80mmx80mm so as its name suggests it's almost cubic in its dimensions.
