Introduction
The
old adage that you can never have too much storage
capacity still holds true but as the PC has advanced
and evolved in ways that could never have been expected
even a few short years ago, so it's not just amounts
of storage but also the types of storage that become
important.
There's a seemingly endless passion for all types
of storage at the moment with USB Flash drives appearing
from all manner of manufacturers and CD-RWs now almost
as common as the humble CD-ROM. The notion of being
able to transport your data with you anywhere you
go is an attractive one but in reality there just
isn't a lot of choice for those who need large scale
(80GB plus), easily rewritable storage that's also
fast enough to be viable, easily portable and can
be increased in capacity at will.
The
idea of external storage devices isn't a new one as
owners of Iomega's Zip and Jazz drives will tell you,
what stunted the development of high performance external
storage was the total absence of any high speed pathways
to get the data in and out. Now we have USB2.0 and
FireWire things look set to change and with sustained
transfer rates of 34 to 40 MB/Sec the idea of high
data throughput external devices of all kinds is becoming
reality.
Today
I want to look at an external hard drive from Maxtor.
The 5000DV we're looking at today is a 120GB, 7200RPM
hard drive that comes ready to run through either
USB2.0, IEEE1394 (FireWire) or USB1.1 interfaces all
packed neatly in a stylish housing to keep it safe.
Unlike its bigger brothers the 160GB and 200GB both
of which feature an 8MB cache, the 120GB features
a more mainstream 2MB.
Let's
take a waft over the specs first:
