Introduction
Ahh
the joys of the perpetual motion marketing machine.
No sooner are we getting to grips with one set of
randomly chosen model numbers than along comes another.
The subject of today's review is the Albatron Ti4680P-Turbo
which despite all signs to the contrary, both physical
and in its nomenclature, is a GeForce4 Ti4200.
Like
its predecessor the NV25 driven Ti4200P-Turbo, the
Ti4680P-Turbo is a steroid enhanced implementation
of the Ti4200 level AGP 8X enabled NV28.2 GPU. In
pursuit of ever higher performance in a more affordable
package, Albatron were the first company to pioneer
the innovation of integrating a Ti4200 class GPU,
commonly deployed on a 6 layer PCB, onto the Ti4600s
8 layer PCB offering more flexibility in trace routing
and order. Along with the bigger, beefier PCB comes
128MB of 3.3ns BGA memory and as per the 4200P-Turbo
a very efficient all-copper heat sink and aluminium
RAM sinks front and rear to keep things cool.
We've
seen the Radeon 9700 pretty much mop up the high end
gaming market with those not prepared to buy ATi opting
instead for the still incredibly capable Ti4600. The
original Ti4200 was attracting a more cunning gamer,
one who realised that the headroom in the Ti4200 left
enough overclocking potential to give a quality experience
while saving a wad of cash at the same time. That
same category of buyer are now turning their attention
to cards like the Ti4680 which for a small premium
are giving a huge increase over stock settings and
a lot of performance for the money. With the original
AGP4X NV25 Ti4200 GPUs virtually nonexistent now,
the big question we had on receiving this card was
whether Albatron could squeeze the same performance
out of this new GPU as they managed with the Ti4200P-Turbo.
