CloneCD
v4.0.1.10
Probably
one of the mainstay software apps when it comes to
burning those...errm...backups is Elaborate Bytes'
CloneCD. One of the hiccups from the Plextor
PX-W4824TA
was the lack of RAW-S support which thankfully the
CR52-A2 does feature.

Nero
CDSpeed v1.02
Running
both drives through Nero's CDSpeed showed that while
the Plextor didn't quite reach its rated speed of
48x, falling just short at 47.47x, the MSI drive blitzed
through its rated 52x rating hitting 52.72x. The CR52-A2's
average speed of 40.02x is pretty damned good by all
accounts.
The
Plextor did manage a fairly convincing win when it
came to seek times registering an awesome 115ms for
a full seek against 143ms for the MSI. Having said
that the noise from the Plextor's head/motor during
heavy seek activity is disconcertingly loud while
the MSI remained almost silent.

The
CR52-A2 also records a lower CPU usage result with,
0,1,2 and 5% usage at 1x,2x,4x and 8x compared to
1,1,3 and 6% for the Plextor.
For
rewritables writes it seems MSI have chosen to take
the CLV route which means we're seeing some very high
rotation speeds at the beginning of the disk!

Overburning Test
On
conventional 80 minute, 48x Taiyo Yuden 48x blank
media the overburning test seemed to favor the Plextor
which recorded a final burn of 83 minutes and 57 seconds
as opposed to 82 minutes and 26 seconds from the MSI.

In
some ways we could conclude that the MSI takes the
overburning competition by default due to its support
for 90 minute media but that's always assuming you
can find any (try Infiniti).
Finding 90 minute 52x rated media may prove harder
still to find offline!
