The
Camera :::...
The
R507 is a compact and stylish camera with an aluminium front
fascia. The front is dominated by the extending 3x optical
zoom lens which is further complimented by a 7x digital
zoom function taking total magnfication to 21x. As I've
mentioned before, the digital zoom figure should be totally
ignored. All a digital zoom does is to enlarge part of the
image captured at maximum optical zoom, something you can
do yourself with probably superior results using your favourite
image editing software. The important figure is the optical
zoom level.

The
body is very easily pocketed measuring just
3.4 inches (L) x 1.1 inches (W) x 2.2 inches (H), and at
just 132 grams it's also impressively light.

The
bulk of the camera is made from a graphite coloured matt
plastic which feels reassuringly solid and creak-free in
the hand but which may well polish smooth in places after
extensive use. The lack of a deep, sculptured handgrip mean
the R507 doesn't feel quite as secure in the hand as some
bigger cameras available, but it was surprisingly comfortable
to hold even for longer periods of time.

The
top features from the left are the playback speaker, shooting
mode selector allowing access to the nine preset shooting
modes (Panorama, Auto, Action, Landscape, Portrait, Beach
& Snow, Sunset and Aperture Priority), the focus mode
seldector (narmal, marco and super macro), the shutter release
button and the video capture button.

Underneath
is a plastic tripod socket which is not on the lens axis,
above which is the contact for the docking cradle. On the
right is the battery/memory compartment cover. The camera
comes with 32MB of internal memory built in but no additional
memory card is supplied.

Behind
a sall rubber dust flap on the left hand side is the optional
DC power adaptor socket and USB data port. A USB data cable
is supplied though for some reason it had a square, type
"B" end on it in addition to the mini-B end (camera
end) which makes it all but useless for most PC users who
don't want to connect directly to a printer. Those wanting
to connect directly to a PC will need to source a mini-B
to Type A lead.
