The testbed :::...

So, how does all of this stack up? In the following pages you see the specs of our testbed here, and the results of hours of benchmarking. The end result? What do you think? I am looking at one of the fastest graphics cards on the market today, in a system that can showcase it well, so I don’t think I'll have to taint the ballots and carry out legal battles to announce a winner.

The testbed:
  • Abit NF-72SG motherboard (nForce2 Ultra400 chipset)
  • AthlonXP 3200+ (400MHz)
  • 1GB Kingston HyperX PC4000 (DDR500)
  • WD800 80GB SATA HDD
  • 420W Thermaltake PSU

VisionTek Xtasy Radeon X800XT
Vs.
Inno3D FX5900 Tornado

I have not overclocked any component unless specified in the test. All benchmarks are the result of an average of three runs, and if there was notable discrepancy, I re-checked all settings, ran a default run to verify consistency and reran the test three more times. Games, drivers and synthetic tests have been updated to their latest versions before testing. I chose to run the non-WHQL drivers for the ATi card, as there were some general fixes for 256MB cards that were necessary in the gaming tests.

Testing methods:

Games:

  • Doom3
  • Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness
Futuremark tests:
  • 3D Mark 2002SE
  • 3D Mark2003
  • 3D Mark2005
Synthetic testing:
  • ShaderMark
  • D3D Rightmark

So, with the rules of the match laid out, let's get this show on the road…
