In the box :

Break open the reassuringly heavy (10.6kg) carton and inside you'll find your new ZXR-500s. Packed well in expanded polystyrene are the five satellite speakers, five clip on stands and of course the sub. Also in the box are six cables, three dual phono to dual phono and three dual phono to 3.5mm jack which should cater for most situations.

The satellites:

The satellites feature a single 3" driver and they have a nice weight to them. The two fronts and the centre speaker each come with a more than ample 3 metres of cable while the two rears come with a generous 8 metres all of which comes in handy when it comes to positioning and routing.

Although plastic, the brushed aluminium silver effect is very classy and means they're not going to look out of place no matter where you stick them. The stands are also plastic and slide into the base of the satellites, locating firmly with virtually no chance of vibration. The stands feature rubber pads on each of the three feet which also helps to reduce unwanted vibrations and keep the speakers where you put them rather than having them dancing across your workspace.

I do have a couple of minor gripes with the design of the satellites though. Firstly I think it would have been useful to have a cable clip molded into the bottom of the stands. With the speakers sat on the stands the cable emerges quite high up and I found myself routing it around one of the feet to keep it looking tidy. Also, if you decide not to use the stands then you find that the base of the satellites aren't perfectly flat. It's not much but it's enough to cause vibration at even moderate volume levels. VideoLogic should really have supplied some stick on pads to apply to the bottom of the satellites for when the stands aren't in use, or pre-applied them at the production stage. The final point is that there's no easy way to wall mount them which may or may not be a problem for you. In my case it wasn't :)

Okay so I've mentioned the negatives but let's finish up this section on a positive note. On the whole the satellites look and feel very good. The enclosures are nicely molded with no telltale seams that scream "look at me, I'm plastic" and the stands are a very attractive design. The weight inspires confidence and there's all the cable you're likely to need which is just as well considering it's pre-fitted with phono plugs rendering it difficult to extend it. All in all the first impressions thus far are very positive. Now for the sub........
